China shuts down YouTube

When the Chinese government considered letting the internet flow behind the Bamboo Curtain a number of years ago, it was reported that China’s government leaders wanted to meet with the “Chairman of the Internet” to discuss the digital intrusion.

These leaders were flummoxed when they discovered that there was not “chairman of the internet,” that this resource was permitted to flow in and our of teritory like the wind. Not exactly the Chinese way, eh?

Today, it has been reported that YouTube — the video content aggregator for everything from the sublime to the ridiculous — has become a victim of the nation’s notorious email filters, with the government-backed control system blocking the content from reaching internet users.

It’s a shame… the surfboard riding squirrel could have become a useful icon for what to do for amusement when the Three Gorges Dam is completed and the watershed basin floods.
